AK MOTORSPORTS electronics division
the AK MOTORSPORTS electronics division has been testing high power audio amplifiers. one of them was 1500 watts RMS! it runs plus and minus 135 volt power rails. it has to plug into a dryer outlet. now this would be enough for a small concert!

we invented the roomba?
way back a long time ago we prototyped a remote control vacuum cleaner and trash can robot. do you think roomba stole our idea?
if we can find any pictures we will post them.

motors
over our lawnmower experiences we have decided which motors are good and which are bad. the best brand is honda close behind is kohler. the worst is briggs and stratton right above that is Tecumseh

first lawnmower
the first lawnmower we ever modified was a murray with a 16.5 hp briggs 2 cylinder. we changed the pulley out on the back to make it go 15 mph. when someone ran it into a tree it damaged the carbureator and the motor never ran right. that is where we got the transaxle and tires for the red lawnmower.

how to make your lawnmower do wheelies
the easiest way to make a lawnmower do wheelies is to put an electromagnetic clutch on the drive belt then put it into high gear and connect current to the coils.
Posted by kevin ackerman at 11:16:00 AM
pulleys
when changing pulleys on lawnmowers remember to make sure they are welded straight and dont wobble this could send your go kart into a really fast washing machine also on lawnmowers with belt tension typed clutches make sure the belts run in the right place and dont get stuck in the pulleys.

sparkplugs
if you often have sparkplug problems in your overhead valve lawnmowers we recommend you buy GM car sparkplugs you won't believe the gain in fuel efficiency.

red lawnmower upgrade
we upgraded the tires on the red lawnmower to a pair off of a john deere that were about 2 inches bigger. the calculated gain is 12.5 percent. that means a top speed of 17 mph over the old 15 mph. every bit counts here.

what kind of belt is the best?
here at AK MOTORSPORTS we prefer and only use green multi layer fabric wrapped lawnmower belts. you will never find a more durable belt. they never slip either. if you need a belt these are the only way to go.

solar lawnmowers
are solar lawnmowers possible? well yes they have a few but they are not practical they have to stop and charge up and work very slowly. but with advances in solar and battery technology solar lawnmowers will be possible. i dont know if you will be able to make go karts out of them

the mythbusters test gas vs electric go karts
in this epeisode the mythbusters compared gas and electric powered go karts. they built the electric one themselves. check out the story in detail here. http://www.popularmechanics.com/home_journal/workshop/4264026.html?page=1

solar lawnmowers
is it possible to build a solar lawnmower? sure but it isnt very practical yet, we still need advances in technology before it will be possible for it to run steady and not have to stop and recharge.

go kart alternative energy
convert your lawnmower or go kart to run diesel or jet fuel or vegetable oil or ethanol or anything else that can burn. all you need to do is increase the compression and install a direct injection system. this might also increase the hp output.
Posted by kevin ackerman at 12:16:00 PM
new lawnmower
our most recent project a john deere lawnmower with a diesel engine from a dixie chopper lawn mower. this thing has power. it can pull trees out of the ground. it can pull cars. it can run through a brick wall. well maybe not the wall, but it can pull cars.

pulsejet
a pulsejet is a jet engine consisting of a tuned combustion chamber with a feedback resonant chamber causing the propane flame to loop around and re ignite and oscillate to produce lots of thrust
Posted by kevin ackerman at 11:21:00 AM
build a jet engine
we are building a small jet engine for a small remote control plane we are building. the engine will consist of a turbocharger being turned by a leaf blower and injected with propane. it should have about 1200 lbs of pushing force and should be able to get up to 200 mph and go up to about 30,000 feet up.

newest go kart
we recently acquired a 5 hp briggs motor that was on a go kart that caught on fire. the motor looked burnt but it runs just like new. we are planning on building an extremely simple go kart using a differential rear axle and metal conduit. it will go about 25 mph but it will be off road so it will seem like more when you're drifting around trees. we installed longer cylinder head bolts so that we can run diesel fuel without the motor blowing to pieces.
Posted by kevin ackerman at 12:00:00 PM
why would a lawnmower make a good go kart?
a lawnmower makes a perfect frame for a go kart because the boring things are already done for you like steering and suspension. on the go karts that we built entirely from the ground up the steering and suspension usually take a few days to construct. although the ones that we built work much better. a lawn mower is perfect for a go kart that you want to finish fast and only have to worry about the drivetrain.

simple answer, check out youtube.

how fast can a lawn mower with the original engine go?
the record for the fastest lawnmower with the original engine is 87 mph! the creator was trying to hit 100 but couldn't get any faster. if he had some of our products on his engine he could have gone above and beyond 100 mph. but I don't know if electronic ignition, fuel injection, and turbochargers are allowed in the regulations.
Posted by kevin ackerman at 11:27:00 AM
engine performance
we have come up with a design for putting solenoids in the place where the valve springs normally go. allowing us to change the engine timing and make it either easy to start or more powerful or anywhere in between. it also takes away the need for a camshaft which cuts down on internal friction in the motor in turn boosting efficiency.
Posted by kevin ackerman at 11:24:00 AM
lawnmower problems
we had a problem with the ignition coil on the red lawnmower project. something got into the fan and smashed the sensor off of the front of the coil. it was beyond fixing so we built an electronic ignition module. which allows us to get about 10 more hp out of the motor.

new project
our newest project is a 2003 chevrolet S10 with a blown motor that we bought on ebay. so we took it apart and put in new rings and bearings. we also machined down the cylinder head because it was warped. we cleaned it all out and now it runs just like new. we found out that the problem was caused by a hole in the radiator that was caused by an ignorant person replacing the battery and smashing it into the tank on the side of the radiator. we fixed that and now it works just like new.

insane lawnmower test results
yesterday we did a top speed test on the new racing lawnmower. we drove it 2 miles on about 8 fl oz of gas. this thing moves. we clocked it at a top speed of 45 mph we have to lower the center of gravity because this thing could flip way too easily. check out the youtube link lower down on the page for a video. keep in mind the camera vehicle is going just above 30 mph. pictures coming soon.

extremely crazy lawn mower
over the weekend we put together the lawn mower that we have been planning. it has the briggs single cylinder 12.5 hp vertical engine. we are using the original john deere transaxle. we directly flipped the pulleys to give us a 4:1 ratio instead of the factory 1:4. we calculate the input shaft on the transmission to be spinning about 10 - 15 thousand Rpm. this go kart goes 30 mph in third gear. we will be testing it today for top speed capabilities. we expect about 45 - 50 mph top speed. this is the kind of lawn mower that you want to wear a crash helmet when driving it. before we test it for top speed we will have to lower the seat and steering wheel so that it isnt too top heavy. we dont want to flip it over. unfortunately it goes too fast to be safe so sadly, after the top speed test we have to change the pulleys for a top speed of about 30 mph because right now it is just too dangerous. we will probably have to build a roll cage over the engine so it doesn't get smashed if we flip. we will most likely end up putting a roll cage on the whole thing so that the driver is safe. we installed a bumper so that the motor is protected from trees and other lawn mowers. pictures and videos coming soon.

track vehicle plans
we recently acquired a briggs 12.5 hp lawnmower engine. we are planning on building a utility vehicle to move cars, parts, and people around the track area. it will consist of a modified john deere frame with the briggs motor and a john deere transaxle. we plan to totally flip the pulleys to make it have the opposite ratio causing it to go about 30 - 40 mph. we have built a lot of fast lawnmowers but this one will hopefully be the one to top them all. this machine will be the quietest, strongest, fastest, and coolest lawnmower we have ever built. this thing will move. pictures coming soon.

new lawn mower project
recently we received a lawnmower engine for free. we are planning on creating a hybrid go kart. it will be electric driven and have a car alternator attached to the lawnmower motor which will Charge the batteries and run the electric motor. this vehicle is expected to go about 30 - 40 Mph. the electric system will be similar to the one on the electric go kart. pictures coming soon.

half john deere lawn mower
this crazy contraption is built on a john Deere frame and has the original transaxle. we changed the pulleys and installed a Briggs 16.5 hp V twin motor. that went relatively fast but it wasn't good enough. we got the idea to use a leaf blower as a supercharger. so we installed the turbine Assembly from the leaf blower and attached it to the drive belt and ran a pipe up to the carbureator. we get about 100 hp out of it now. it gets up to about 9000 Rpm on nitromethane racing fuel. it goes about 30 Mph now. pictures coming soon.

the amazing life of the red lawn mower
the red lawn mower started life as a normal production lawnmower. apparently the original motor quit working because we found it in a dumpster. we chopped off everything that wasn't needed. and put on a worn out 5hp Honda motor with a simple centrifugal clutch and a differential drive axle. it went about 50 mph. when that motor quit working it sat out in the back yard for two years until we bought a 2hp electric treadmill motor. that combination only went about 15mph because the frame was so heavy. that sat around for about 4 years until we got the 15hp vertical kohler engine and the techumseh transaxle. which gets us up to now with the modifications to the engine to get 120hp.

how fast can an electric go kart be?
here at AK motorsports we are doing some research on an upcoming electric go kart. it will have a 3hp 72 volt dc motor with a custom built AK motorsports PWM controller. it will get its power from 6 12 volt 20 amp Hr lead acid batteries. we are calculating a top speed of about 30-40 mph and will accelerate from 0 to 30 in about 2-3 seconds. pictures coming soon.

our latest project a 1968 pontiac tempest
this car had it's drivetrain totally rebuilt about 7 years ago but the body and interior are trashed. we started by fixing the gaping holes in the floor under the driver and passenger's feet and under the front seat. we ordered new floorpans and replaced the entire midsection or the car's floor. right now we sent the bumpers out to be re-chromed and we are working on the dents and gashes all over the car. we are hoping to get all new interior pieces and have the car looking almost as good as when it came off the production line. the motor is a 350 bored .030 over. we took off the air conditioner because the compressor weighs about 70 lbs. pictures coming soon.

racing lawnmowers
on the right you will also see a few pictures of our high performance racing lawnmower project. This crazy piece of lawn maintenance equiptment goes about 50 mph! it has what used to be a kohler 15 hp 426cc single cylinder vertical engine which is bored .030 over and has an AK motorsports specialty electronic controlled turbocharger and a custom racing camshaft. it runs about 120 Hp now. it is complete with a 5 speed transaxle with a high strength alloy gear kit. notice the gatorade fuel container. more pictures coming soon.
